If you need to create an account and avatar in Second Life, and you are affiliated with higher education as either a student or faculty/staff member, I recommend joining directly through NMC (New Media Consortium). Their orientation island will be better suited to your experience as a new resident, and you will find it easier to transition into Second Life than if you use the general orientation islands. (Some find it difficult to leave those islands.)
